WARNING THERE ARE SPOILERS TO THOR THE COMIC SERIES STARTING FROM THOR #8
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Still with us? Awesome!

On Marvel's Thor issue #8 reveals the true identity of our female Thor, who happens to be Jane Foster. Shocker! Right?! Jane is an accomplished doctor and girlfriend to the former (or original) Thor. Though many of us had seen this coming, or not, what is even more shocking is the back story to her character.
The original Thor, which the cinematic audience recognizes as Chris Hemsworth, was claimed unworthy of Mjölnir following an as-yet-unexplained incident last year. This is when the moment when Jane picked up the hammer instead of our well original Thor, and the world got a (new) feminine Thor.
Though it seems very positive and different that Jane has taken the spotlight as the new Thor along with having a female portraying the role, there is also a downside involving her story arc/characterization. Readers find out that Jane is dying from terminal breast cancer. While Jane as Thor is basically a god, regular Jane is still battling her sickness. It is no surprise that this transformation may be making her condition even worse.
In a recent interview from Vulture with Jason Aaron, writer of Thor, reveals:
"it was never just about the surprise or the mystery. Clearly I’ve had fun playing with that part of it over the course of these eight issues [since we introduced the new Thor]. But that’s really all just setup for the real story. And Jane was the one I had a story with, whose story I wanted to tell." Aaron also adds about Jane's character:
"Jane’s been a part of Thor’s universe going back almost to the very beginning. She was the initial love interest for Donald Blake, who was Thor’s alter-ego [in early Thor stories]. She was the nurse to his doctor. She’s grown and changed and evolved a lot over the years, become a doctor in her own right. So this to me is not just the next step for her character, but really the next evolution of the core promise that has always been at the heart of Thor’s mythology."

Being it's 8th issue, the female Thor has been a popular hero that has appealed to many new audiences, women and younger female readers being one of the main audiences. She has also been featured in Marvel's new release of The Secret Wars, which was released on Free Comic Book Day this year, along with new and re-imagined Avengers. She will be playing a major role as the god of thunder in The Secret Wars. The release of a new Avengers comic series also raises the question of who will play who if there is to be a reboot or continuation of the Avengers cinematic series once the current actors' contracts are over? More to the topic, who will playing Thor when Chris Hemsworth's contract with Marvel studios is over? It is hard to imagine that Marvel will decide to choose a new Thor since Chris Hemsworth has permanently left his mark as the god of thunder to the fans of the cinematic Marvel Universe. Though if Marvel studios decides to go the direction in which the new and re-imagined Avengers is at, it will be no surprise if Marvel studios decides to cast Natalie Portman as the female Thor since she currently plays Jane Foster in the Marvel cinematic universe of Thor.
Thor issue #8 will be releasing on May 13th.
